It has a lot to do with Nancy and her White House Astrologer. The Religious Right was pretty incensed that Reagan courted their support so closely but once in power allowed a heathen idolatress to determine the very china off which he ate.

They have spent the whole time since working to get their people in power in all aspects of society: business, administration, education and, of course politics, namely hijacking the GOP and using it to hole the entire nation hostage to their agenda.
