The ease and availability of mass media allows essentially your entire populace to become easily controlled with bread and circuses, especially the circuses. Furthermore, the disparity of force now wielded by the powerful (ie. a modern army is so far advanced beyond the capability of the populace to revolt) makes any sort of revolution essentially impossible.

That’s really always been the case (the disparity of force, I mean) — revolutions happen when the soldiers change sides. On the bread and circuses aspect, they have to keep supplying bread (i.e. the minimum standard that we will now accept).
