If you think that’s bad, realize that the US has lost nuclear weapons over the years, including off Charleston/Savannah in the Tybee Island incident. The US never recovered that nuclear weapon. When that incident occurred, the US came very close to nuking the area between those two cities.

It’s also not the only time the US has accidentally almost nuked itself. In 1961, the USAF almost nuked North Carolina, with the bomb in question actually being perilously close to having detonated.
