I can understand why President Johnson felt the necessity to try and reintegrate the rebelling states quickly.

However, in hindsight I think not enough was done.

True, bigotry was rampant in the North also. But the so called “radicals” in the South, the abolitionists, really ought to have been more actively promoted by the Johnson administration as the future of the South. I would have even gone as far as opening up the entire South as a single un-Stated territory, and forced new States to form.

Johnson since we were talking about Batman earlier lived long enough to become the villain. His actions were heroic during the Civil War even if he was an unapologetic racist. But he failed during reconstruction for the reasons you state.
