This is what I don’t get about that objection: Yes, Jesus talked about how you should want to give away your possessions, should want to be charitable, etc. He’s not talking about the government doing it.

However, when we vote on things like increasing food stamps, providing health care for the poor, etc., that is volunteering to be charitable, to me. That is volunteering that we want a society where that happens, and where those values are held.

So the objection never makes any sense to me— Jesus didn’t say say:

“Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me— but if you did it through legislation it’s bad and wrong.”
