It was never supposed to make sense. Lost is a socio-psychological experiment in mass-manipulation. After they got away with the big bear-creature and the black smoke creature in their first seasons, the writers of that stupid fucking show decided that they could put pretty much anything in the script and people would tune in to impress themselves with how much they ‘got it.’ They could have an episode where everyone on the island stares at a turd waiting for the tide to take it away, and people would watch the show.

I always suspected the writers only expected the show to last a season or two, had no plans for plotline after that, and just sort of cobbled things together after that.
