My grandmother’s phone still had a disk in the middle of the rotor that said “Fleetwood” in the 1970s. I think that was some sort of code?? It wasn’t used anymore in the 1970s, but here rotary phone, which weighed about 20# and had years of dust and wax buildup must have had 4+F or something. I’ll have to ask my dad. Oh, wait. He can’t remember anything anymore.

The first two digits of the exchange were alphabetical. An old number in my city would have been “PIoneer 4-xxxx”, the exchange would be 744-xxxx. There is a website with the old names of many US exchanges, and it is firmly imbedded into American culture (“Pennsylvania 6-5000”).
