I’ve had an HSA since their inception. They are much more difficult to handle now since ACA. The only complicating factor would have been the fact that you made some money on the excess contribution. Good for you.

That’s not really the ACA’s fault though.

The biggest headache so far has been my inability to find the information from the company handling the account about how to withdraw the excess (and it’s not in my name so I can’t call and ask) and the fact that the IRS can’t hyperlink forms, apparently.

They sent us a debit card that we could use for it (which we were intending to use it as a retirement savings account, so, whatever) and you have to keep track of receipts but for anything where it’s tax free, you’d have to do that.
