First off, the American Left, with the exception of the true moonbats has always acknowledged the monstrosity that was Stalin and the evils of Russia. Do conisder how The Gulag Archipelago and the other works of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn are the sorts of things that all of those liberal educated elitist types would read where as the Palin types have never even heard the name.

In fact, you will find if you look at the history, during the Depression the American communist party reached its peak only to dwindle to nothingness not so much because of Red Scares or the hyperventilating of the right, but rather because American leftists felt betrayed by Stalin (as in they realized he was a monster).

By the time McCarthy got on the scene, there was no effective American communist party - not that it was ever particularly large to begin with.

Finally, you have got to look at the history of America and dictators.

The history of American governments supporting utter bastards totalitarians is long and checkered. It covers both ends of the spectrum, but it usually is the American right protecting American business that puts them in place.
