In the case of Syria, I would think of it as being UN action after a collapse of Al-Assad, with it being “Peacekeeping on Steroids”. In essence, we would be there to prevent a full civil war from breaking out, and to prevent massive Crimes against Humanity. Again, in essence, a more aggressive version of what is done in Africa and Lebanon.

I would imagine support from at least Turkey, and plausibly Iraq (Shia Majority might be worried about Alawites), and perhaps a smattering of other Arab States. Maybe Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya?

And, with all the links between Iran and Syria, I do think a backflush from Syria to Iran would occur, igniting more unrest. The economic and social situation in Iran is much worse than in 2009.
