It goes back to what I’ve been saying for quite some time. They’re capable of getting serial killers and mass murderers into custody (see Boston bomber, Aurora killer, etc.) but routinely can’t take other suspects into custody, even when they’re unarmed.

Moreover, it would appear police simply don’t train sufficiently to have a nonlethal way to get mentally ill suspects into custody.

I know some others here have noted that hospital workers are able to deal with violent mentally ill patients without killing them, so it can be done.

There needs to be a sea-change in how police are trained to use force, deadly force, and in particular deal with suspects who may be mentally ill because they are disproportionately ending up dead at the hands of officers who claim justification in use of deadly force.
