He;s a lot like Erich von Dniken.

Well, I wouldn’t go that far.

But I get the impression that he is still haunted by his early fundamentalism. First in his academic career he makes a name for himself separating from said fundamentalism, and now he goes around to radio stations and lecture halls and sells himself as the one who is truly proving Jesus (of the Gospels) really did exist.

The problem he is demonstrating is trying too hard to sell books, and he does that by being quite coy in his interviews and to which audiences he addresses.

I don’t blame anyone for trying to make money by marketing their expertise, and as he’s a NT historian his source of income, outside of his teaching salary, is to sell books and lectures about the NT.

But his popular talks are hardly scholarly, as he demonstrates by his unmeasured statements.
