re: #289 Backwoods_Sleuth

I just remembered something from back in the olden days when I worked in a book bindery (I was a typesetter for stamping titles and Dewey Decimal System numbers on the spines). The people who worked at the end of the line used something soft and squishy like rubber cement between the back of the sewn pages and the spine of the cover. Then the end pages were glued to the inside of the covers.

Actually, it might have been rubber cement. I’ve seen some old books with what looks like the remnants of rubber cement on the parts that have come apart. We used to use it in art class in college and at high school yearbook seminars. I remember it not lasting forever and leaving a rather distinctive stain.
