Maybe I’m being too meta about it, but I think that many conservatives realize that their white-male-dominated world is irrecoverably lost. That realization drives them to nihilism; they’d rather have the whole works go up in chunks if they can’t be in charge.

Well, yeah. I mean, it’s the same demographic that will ignore all kinds of data that points to anthropogenic climate change because it stands in contradiction to their preconceived notions of a universe created solely for the pleasure of Mankind. To a large degree there’s a lot of faith riding on this. Climate change “Optimism” as they’re calling it now is more of the same. Yes, it’s changing; but, 1) it’s something that we can adapt to without having to make any changes because, 2) God will fix it either way.
