He made it so far in the Republican party that President H.W Bush and the Republican establishment in Louisiana had to disawow his candidacy. A lot of old right wing dixiecrats refused to join the GOP because they still blamed the GOP for the “War of Northern Aggression.”

He also ran as a Republican during the 1992 presidential primaries. Seeing his name along with Pat Buchanan’s on the Mass. primary ballot was one of the things that soured me on the party.
