In reality, there is a lot of truth to the notion that US invasion of Iraq fueled ISIS.

It was what a lot of critics of the invasion pointed out that taking out Hussein would just create a new enemy. The Bush administration had no plan for how to handle Iraq after the invasion. The invasion itself was fairly easy part. Easy in relative terms since we still did lose men but the occupation and the resulting strife caused much more deaths. There’s a reason why many Republicans even run away from W Bush.
