I think you’re discounting the pure tribalism at work here. I doubt that most people give the philosophical theorizing on this issue any thought. Most Americans don’t like this because it happened to us, not someone else. They would be singing a different tune if it happened to England, Australia or Japan. We would be laughing in the streets if this happened to North Korea or Iran.
