Certainly not everything you read about food and farming is Malthusian, especially if you look at peer reviewed professional journals on agricultural research. In sources that emphasize the technology side, there is a lot of useful work being carried on at field level with very practical applications. USDA’s Agricultural Research Service online newsletter often has worthwhile information on current research results also.

The difficulty in many cases is to see that the information is spread effectively to those who need it the most and can use it, after the methods are tested and verified. A while back I attended a seminar presented on sustainable agriculture by a group of young graduate students from several area universities. To see these promising, intelligent young people deeply involved in understanding and solving problems of sustainable food access was truly encouraging.
