Karzai’s opportunism is enabled by our physical defense of him. He really is biting the hand that is feeding him (at least currently.)

Perhaps Karzai is looking at an Afghanistan post-US occupation? Perhaps he is trying to set himself up as sort of a Taliban-lite option with whom the local (more hardcore) tribal leaders will work, once US troops leave?
