Most expert witnesses get compensated even if they are testifying for the state. I mean this guy was an expert witness for Letitia James in a case against exxon and I am sure he didn’t donate his time for free. Should all that testimony be called into question because he was paid? It is the system we have, experts don’t work for free(usually).

That said, I doubt most experts make nearly $1M for one appearance as an expert witness.
