Well now wait a minute… if we need to make cuts (and we do) does it not make sense to ask people what they want cut?

That’s what elections are for.

Asking people what individual items they want cut is government by referendum, California style (although we always seem to get what you want earmarked for a certain expenditure, rather than what you want cut—the principle, though, is the same).

Doing it not by election at all, but by an internet poll, is not government at all but a recipe for loud-voiced demagoguery and chaos.
