There is a tale that a naval officer, needing a white paper for an advanced course, analysed the early service/discipline records of some of our most brilliant WWII admirals. His conclusion was that none of them would have made it to command in the 1990s Navy.

With any luck, we’ll never discover what kind of person would make a good Admiral or General in a large scale 21st Century war.
