It’s a win-win for the estate: who the hell had heard of that Spirit song before this lawsuit? Now it has had millions of people listening to the intro, at least.

And I’ve known people that have been talking about Taurus and Led Zep for 15 years or more. That’s because I know a bunch of Spirit fans (me included) that upon hearing the lick said right off ‘hey this sounds like the intro to Stairway to Heaven’.

And then there was my one friend (since passed) that was a huge Spirit fan back when we were in high school (69-72) and when he heard Stairway to Heaven said “Hey that intro sounds like that Spirit tune”

In other words…this is not new. It may be new to those that never heard it before this year and to those that had no idea there was a cool band named Spirit.

And since I like to play and write and have a pretty good feel for the history of R&R I am watching the whole trial with much interest. And I always keep in mind that Zep has been accused of nicking a lot of licks and lyrics from others.

Matter of fact, I got a pretty good laugh at the “session musicians” comment, as that is exactly how Jimmy Page started out.
