I don’t really get the resistance to fingerprinting and running background checks on drivers. It’ can’t just be the cost because it’s not that great vs. the profits companies like Uber and Lyft generate. Is it just some slippery slope bullshit where they’re afraid of losing the insulation between themselves and drivers that independent contractor status provides.

I should really research the whole thing more but it’s never come up because I have my own car, don’t use a smart phone and never have more than one drink when I’m out. At first glance the insurance situation strikes me as fairly convoluted and ripe for abuse. I’m honestly surprised most car insurance companies cover cars belonging to drivers involved in this shit.

Most car insurance policies that the drivers have probably *won’t* cover if something happens while the car owner is acting as an Uber/Lyft driver. Odds are their car is insured for personal, not commercial, use. And for personal and to/from work travel.
