The author was arguing for a removal of the 2nd. Which I for one devoutly oppose. Mostly because you can have gun controls and still have the amendment. Only the most egregious examples of gun control gone extreme have been set aside.

Governments like California regularly indulge policies intended to make gun sales to people with no criminal record or mental health issues very difficult. But not impossible. It makes me laugh at the lengths they go to. If a gun maker has a model deemed safe by decades of law enforcement use and make a small change in some detail about the design, like the sights or finish, the gun can not be sold here until it passes expensive and destructive “safety” testing. That is a policy of discouragement not safety.

If we want to buy a gun the wait for your background check is about 10,000 times longer than it takes to do a background check. Ten days instead of a few minutes. Police can get it done in under a minute from a police car with access to the criminal databases.

They call that a “cooling off” period. Which is making all kinds of hostile assumptions about a gun buyer. That is a clear assumption of hostile intent rather than defensive or sporting intent.
