What often does happen with inherited homes… is that the assessed value for property taxes goes up quite a bit (some jurisdictions only revalue when it changes hands, and maybe it’s been 30 years and what used to be the middle of nowhere is now a classy suburb and it’s worth ten times what your parents paid) — and if the inheriting kids don’t have near the income their parents used to, they may not be able to keep up the new rate. Or it’s mortgaged, and the kids can’t keep up the payments plus the new tax rate. At which point it has to be sold.
