These processes build up gradually over time but then hit us so fast that we don’t notice until it is too late to fix anything.

Well, our First Republic is as dead as when Nappy became First Consul. The only real question is if there will be a full bore (Pinochet/Franco level minimum) dictatorship and/or civil war before the Second Republic is established.
