We keep up with autism lit because of Granddaughter 3. Best guess is still a genetic component triggered by unknown (perhaps environmental) factors.
That’s assuming that the word ‘autism’ refers to one condition with a narrow etiology. The docs haven’t got a very good handle on the definitions we’re going to need, viz. autism/Asberger’s.

Lately Asberger’s seems to be synonymous with “just plain weird”. It used to mean something.
