I lived hard…grew up in an upper middle class family, and completely divorced myself from them and their money when I met my first wife…too proud to reach out to them, we registered as medically indigent when she got sick. That meant, instead of making a phone call and seeing a GP or even a specialist within a couple of days, we had to wait until she was in so much pain she couldn’t stand it anymore, and then we got to spend six or eight hours in an emergency waiting room while she writhed in pain before she was triaged in (behind gunshot victims, accident victims, and anyone with health insurance).

I wouldn’t dream of letting anyone have to go through that. Ever. And yes, I did it by choice, and it was a stupid fucking choice. Pride is a motherfucker.
