I don’t think anyone said that atheists are supposed to be rational. Atheism is not defined as being rational.

Atheists self identified as sceptics also pride themselves on using rational reasoning to doubt the existence of god. Those same atheists consider the belief in a god irrational. That’s where the idea of atheists being rational comes from.
