Don’t let the Republican candidates get wind of this. They’ll want to re-activate the handful of museum B-36s, recreate the monster bomb and send it to the Middle East. 42,000 bombs tested this day in 1949. facebook.com
The bomb was the T-12 Cloudmaker. Only a few prototypes of which were built. One is preserved, presumably in de-activated condition, at the Aberdeen Proving Ground.
This is still the record for the heaviest bombload released in one flight.

“Presumably” because in 1958, British armorers set out to move a 10 ton Grand Slam bomb that had been displayed for years outside RAF Scampton, only to discover that it was, in fact, still filled with explosive and still had an active fuse. EEEEK! The unwelcome relic was very carefully loaded onto a trailer and transported to a bombing range, where it was rigged with some small demolition charges and destroyed. The main charge did in fact go off when the demolition charges were remotely triggered.
