re: #279 Great White Snark

A head on hit also would have likely killed 200+ people, mostly crew and 3rd class passengers. The ship weighed 52k tons, and was moving at least 20 kts, producing about 64.72 million kilojoules of energy, if I am doing e=mc^2 correctly.

The ironic thing is that, because they did full speed reverse, the middle propeller stopped, heavily reducing the effectiveness of the ship’s rudder. If it had been going at full steam ahead, or even just reduced speed ahead, turned hard to port, then had the port propeller shut off or reversed, the Titanic would have missed the iceburg.

But, the Titanic disaster needed to happen anyway. Because many people got very reckless, and there were outdated regulations. If it hadn’t been the Titanic, it would have been another ship. Maybe the Mauretania, the Olympic, the France, Imperator, but it would have happened.
