Hm. I don’t really like the phrase “self-hating X” for any value of X. It’s possible to be critical (and even wrongly critical) about one’s own group without being “self-hating”. I think it’s better to assume that such people are simply mistaken or misled.

Ben Carson probably sincerely believes that black people would be better off without welfare. I disagree with him but I don’t think his worldview is based on something other than a desire to have people’s lives improved.
