re: #99 Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines

It’s occurred to me that we will probably not have a Vietnam veteran serve as President of the United States, unless some current unknown can run in 2020 or, at the outside, ‘24.

Three have run, Gore, Kerry, and McCain, and all three lost.

Maybe I should run. I seem to be a billion or more short of the required funds, though and I am not popular with Koch-heads and other evil types.

I noticed that awhile ago. The last WWII vet to run was Bob Dole in 1996, 51 years after the war ended. Men who served in some active theater of WWII at least a bit won six consecutive Presidential elections from ‘52-72, and got a seventh in ‘88. In 2020 it will have been 47 years since the US got out of Vietnam, and GHW Bush was the last war veteran to win a presidential election. Most voters just don’t seem to care whether a candidate served or not anymore.
