As a matter of fact, I think the issue of likeability has been raised in basically every presidential election in my memory.

I remember the whole “have a beer with” thing, but it still doesn’t compare to how the “likeability” issue has been weaponized in recent years against female candidates only (how many pundits even used the word re trump in 2016? Only HRC, it seemed, was ever affixed with the “unlikable” label. And same thing this year with respect to Elizabeth Warren).
