The longer I am on earth, the more I think benefits of war are short-term, the negative affects are generational.

People don’t want to take the time for diplomacy and negotiation. Yet, the fallout of war takes much longer to clean-up.

Sad but true, the reality seems to be that this is a lesson every generation or two needs to learn for themselves. There’s certainly a political movement in Japan, for example, to strip the pacifist language out of the constitution, and it’s primarily driven by younger folk (with the general add-on of the folks who were against it when it happened). For a lot of the folks who actually grew up in the era during and after WWII, though, they’re very passionately against it.

At least we’re more honest about the direct effects on soldiers these days, in that the existence of PTSD is at least recognized.
