I think it really does get at what John Oliver was saying that the most disturbing thing about the rise of authoritarianism wasn’t that there are people with authoritarian ambition but rather that there are plenty of regular people who will condone it.

as long as the authoritarians can present them selves successfully as acting in the populace’s interests, they are more than happy to go along.

democracy is tedious and messy and checks and balances are only appealing when people are trying to check and balance things they oppose.
