when my parents dropped me off at college they headed up to Mackinaw Island and then hit the AlCan highway. None of us heard a peep from them for three weeks.

Mine did not even bother with the dropping off part. They just pointed at the door, wished me well on my future and then left in a vacation for several weeks themselves.
