Venezuelans Return Chvez to Presidency

Official results from the country’s National Election Agency or CNE showed Mr. Chvez and his United Socialist Party of Venezuela winning 54.5% of the votes compared to 45% for Mr. Capriles, a young former state governor who ran a spirited campaign of change.

The win gives Mr. Chvez, a former army tank commander, a mandate to press ahead with his self-styled Socialist revolution. Mr. Chvez has vowed to give more power to grass-roots community councils to carry out social programs with state money—a move critics say would undermine democratically elected mayors across the country.

Sounds like Chavez is cutting off his opponents at the knees again, since Capriles made his bones as governor of his province with social programs. Even if Chavez dies in office from the cancer he has, he’s setting up his cronies to be his successors; he’s not gonna give his opponents any way to come at him (or his successors) any more if he can help it.
