When I was teaching bike mechanics to some Boeing engineers, they told me about a project they worked on to get a little exhaust hole to remove smoke, but not passengers, at 30,000 feet. They were doing it for French customers, because apparently banning smoking for people who eat all the butter they want was still impossible in the 80s.

I must have flown on a couple of flights with smoking sections well into the 80s. Smoking sections! What a joke. There was a little curtain to keep the smoke away from us healthier folk.
