I remember the beginning of registration mostly because, before it, this place was absolutely swarmed with trolls. We had all sorts of episodes, from ones that got in by making their subtly different from those of regulars in order to fuck around, ones who grab a bunch of buddies and spam threads, others who’d create offensive names just because they knew it would get a reaction, and so forth. Eventually most of us regulars had had enough and started calling for registration as it mean A) we could connect names to trolls and B) there could be some measure of control over who came and went.
