The point of Putin doing this isn’t miliary - it’s to show the World that Russia is still a non-nuclear force to be reckoned with. It isn’t, really, but Obama is helping Putin make his point.

The analogy that comes to mind is the bear versus that Timothy Treadwell dude, the one who thought they would do him no harm, until they savaged and ate him.
