Part of the problem is that Madison does have a good number of vocal leftists who regard all right-of-center ideas as dogshit and their defenders as dupes, shills, or demons. Not the majority of left-wing people there, not anywhere close, but enough to give any pushback by the outnumbered Republicans in the area a “Well Screw You!” edge.

Oh. As opposed to the vocal righties who make up a majority of the party.
