I did see that El Paso had a large influx all at once of about 500 people from what I saw reported, but the other numbers are probably standard procedure. They have to have a reason to keep people in custody.

That’s the part the right-wingers are so up in arms about. They’re used to the post-9/11-era, Guantanamo-Bay-style, “Just lock ‘em up and hold ‘em until we figure out something to charge them with.” The idea that people can cross the border, present themselves to an immigration officer, say, “I am requesting asylum,” and then just be let loose because presumption of innocence baffles and enrages them.
