The Contract With America was widely deplored in the MSM—remember the newsmagazine with the cover of a crying baby waving a flag, representing the voters that year? But its platform was popular enough for Bill Clinton to appropriate many elements of it, and add them to his own program.
It’s not immediate obvious how the Tea Party phenomenon could have a similar sequel. People don’t like politicians telling them to shut up and eat their spinach, even if the politicians turn out to be right.
