Processing Metadata is roughly on par with standard traffic analysis. Which has a long historical history in military circles, especially since the advent of radio communications. (And, of course, note that the US was not the only one doing analysis and taking advantage of it.)
Per, “death by metadata”, how about this as a WW2 example.
