I can’t get a card. Eleven years of homelessness tends to foul up your creditworthiness for life, even if you never defaulted on a single payment to anyone.

Everything I do is cash. My wife has a credit card, and she spoke to her card company about putting me on it. They told her they would not do it.

Mrs. Fish was astonished to learn that she had no credit history when we applied for our home loan - she wanted to be listed on the title, but they wouldn’t list her because she had no credit. It was astonishing to her because she had had a loan for her first car when she was a teenager, but by the time we bought the house, it had fallen off her credit report. So I got her a small card that she uses for groceries and I keep it paid off every month, and that suits us just fine for the intended purpose.
