It is one that I struggle with every day.

I’m not one for organized religion (shorter take: our parish priest did 3 years in state prison for what he did to us, which the church knew about), but I do occasionally go to Agape, and the Rev. there had a sermon that stuck with me.

The subject was “Identity Theft.”

Meh, I thought. How much of a big deal is it to have someone swipe your credit card numbers of social security number? Surely quite annoying and costly, but not really an “immortal soul-type” issue.

But it was. The construct goes this way:

When someone acts in such an infuriating, ugly, awful way as to drive you into hate, fury and nonstop rage … then you are no longer yourself.

You are the victim of Identity Theft. Someone has stolen away the essence of the kind, caring and gentle person you are, and replaced that with this furious, depressed person who lashes out and spreads misery.

Resist Identity Theft. Be who you are. Do not be a mirror to what you see.

It’s why my wife is opposed to organised medicine.

Identity theft from a hospital and sold to an underground list of physicians claiming insurance for all sorts of things across the country she never had done. (Her employer caught it when she had an abortion in California and a hysterectomy in Maryland on the same day.)
