I made myself valuable to my first boss, busted my ass for months. What did I get for it? The knowledge that no matter how hard I worked, I wouldn’t be able to receive that few cents more an hour for another 6 months, because corporate policy was reviews happened annually, and then you had to wait for the regional manager to make the rounds to sign off on any proposed raises. So in reality, you could be waiting 18 months between raises. In the mean time, they’d just keep dumping more and more responsibilities on your head so they could have you work virtually any shift.

The wingnut meme is that if you “work hard” you will “earn more”

People who work at menial jobs in retail and fast food “work harder” than degreed, experienced professionals who sit around in a cubicle writing code (while posting to LGF & Twitter).
