The Democratic Party needs a majority of Congressional seats for that platform that they’ve been fighting over to represent more than, say, the Republicans’ vain hopes for a Human Life Amendment. You need millions of voters to “Step away” from the Republicans, now that you’ve seen that there aren’t any significant number of trustworthy voters to your left.

The polling results that 90% of the Sanders supporters plan to vote for Clinton in November still stand, as far as I know. So there are in fact plenty of votes to be had from the left.

There is also extensive experience that shows the futility of trying to peel away Republican voters by going centrist. Trump might actually make that strategy viable this time around, but its a nice to have, not a gotta have. The gotta have is turning out the Obama coalition.
